Career Drives

The Career Drives questionnaire provides insight into a person’s drives or motivators: which aspects of work are motivating? A match between someone’s drives and the characteristics of a role plays a major part in determining the motivation and engagement they will experience in that role. Career Drives also indicates which aspects of work are more likely to demotivate someone.

There are three variants of Career Drives: Adaptive, Normative and Ipsative.

Application
This questionnaire offers differentiated insight into drives, which makes it especially well suited to selection and career advice. It also adds value in study choice. Motivation and engagement are important success factors in job performance. Aligning with a role and with the organisation’s values is essential in that regard.

Career Drives is used for all questions where it matters to learn more about a person’s drives. Because the administration time is very short, its application is highly versatile. Examples include selection, coaching and career advice. You can also easily combine the questionnaire with other questionnaires, without your candidate spending hours filling them in.

Scientific basis
The questionnaire is based on several theoretical models, such as Schwartz’s values (1999), Schein’s career anchors (1993) and Maslow’s hierarchy of needs (1943).

Adaptive testing
For the development of the adaptive questionnaire, extensive research was used to determine for each item what information it yields for different career values. Simply put, from a large pool of items the system always selects the item that, after the previous one, yields the most information. In practice, this means candidates have a much more pleasant experience when completing the questionnaires. They encounter hardly any ‘duplicate’ items that ask about the same characteristics, and on average candidates finish the questionnaire three times faster.

Advantages of adaptive testing:
  • The candidate always receives items that are most relevant to them
  • The questionnaire takes less time (on average three times faster than the normative and ipsative versions)
  • Unlike traditional questionnaires, the adaptive Career Drives also provides accurate estimates of relatively high and low scale scores
Normative and Ipsative
A normative and an ipsative version of the questionnaire are available. The normative version is suitable for advisory situations only. In the ipsative version, two statements are presented against each other; this version can also be used in selection situations.
