Communication Styles

The scientific foundation of the Communication Styles was laid by Reinout E. de Vries (VU) and Angelique Bakker (UvA) through a large-scale study of the factor structure of communication styles. The result is the Communication Styles. We are honoured that Ixly is permitted to publish this questionnaire. The Communication Styles measures the following six communication styles:

  • Precise (P)
  • Expressive (X)
  • Verbally Aggressive (VA)
  • Argumentative (D)
  • Emotional (E)
  • Impression Manipulative (IM)

Application in assessments
Especially for assessments of managerial and commercial roles, the Communication Styles provides additional information in the areas of personality and drives. The style in which a manager communicates has a determining influence on the culture in an organisation. Angelique Bakker’s doctoral thesis demonstrates that communication style has a strong influence on employees and their effectiveness.

Application in training
For training in Management, Sales and Communication, the Communication Styles offers an excellent baseline measurement. In the training you can then respond to the way someone handles different communication moments, such as giving and receiving feedback, correcting and presenting.

Insight into your Communication DNA
The Communication Styles provides insight into the communication DNA. The question then is: which styles are you inclined to use? The communication DNA gives a solid picture of someone’s communicative style and the way someone positions themselves in different situations. It also becomes clear what effects that has. Related questions include: Are you precise and concise in your communication, or rather elaborate? Are you expressive? To what extent are you focused on making a good impression?
